    Hi

    I was wondering if I could get any recommendations or something as to what to do before i take the bike down the shop to get loked at -

    I'm a noob so pls excuse the non-technical language, pls correct me if you want too.

    I have a prob with my gears - Its a 24 gear shimano set - 3x8

    However i cant use the 1st and 2nd of the chain wheel sets, when I change gears on the freewheel set while in 2nd on the chain wheel the gears lock up - I guess theres something wrong with the spacing between the gears, but its pretty serious as I was peddling like hell the other day and it locked up and I flew straight over the handle bars, luckily there was no traffic to worsen the incident.

    I was just wondering if any of you guys have had similar problems and what the remedy was - would it be likely that I need a new gearset? And how much do they run up to?

    Also, I've been getting a squeeking from my gears from sometime now as I peddle, what is that? Just a lack of lubrication? Or something else?

    Any help or advice is most appreciated.

    It's a little difficult to understand what happens from your description. Are you saying that when your chain is on a specific cog on the rear wheel you can't shift the front derailleur? Or are you unable to shift the front derailleur at all? That sort of problem might be because the front derailleur isn't mounted properly or has come loose. A too short chain on the bike would prevent shifting to the large chain ring when the chain is on the largest cog on the rear wheel. Attempting to do so might cause the gears to feel like they are "locking-up".

    I can't imagine anything going on in the transmission that would cause you to go over the handlebars. That is generally a result of the front wheel locking up (a panic brake grab can do that) or falling into a hole in the road/ground, or hitting a log or rock.

    As far a squeaking goes, it may be a poorly lubed chain, poorly lubed pedals, poorly lubed bottom bracket, loose cranks - any or all of the above could cause squeaking.

    What is the general condition of your bike? Do you see rust on the chain? Is it an old bike? Does it sit out in the weather all the time or is it stored/parked indoors?

    its been sorted thanks , it turned out to be the front derailer needing adjustment - and the chain needing some oil. Simple really i guess.
    Just wanted to make sure on here, but i misjudged the rate of posting.
