  1. So its been about 12 months since i bought my bike and i finally decided
to give Beach Road a crack in earnest..... Up until yesterday I had a
few minor group ride experiences (100km version of the ATB last year but
mainly groups of only 4/5 riders....)

I must admit to being pretty apprehensive about it because:
    * of the beach road reputation (esp. recent publicity)
    * the lack of a dedicated bike lane for the whole route
    * embarrassing myself in front of heaps of other cyclists
    * not really knowing about Peloton ettiquette etc...

But all my fears were simply that... i had an awesome ride with no close
shaves, no abuse/dirty looks from others (motorist or other cyclists)
and a much faster and longer ride than normal!!! (funny that) - manged
    100.2km at 28.9km/h

So if you were in a group that kindly dragged me down to Mornington...
thanks very much.... i'm now a Peloton convert...

Previously i read many posts about groups expecting you to take your
turn at the front and all that but i was fine just hanging around the
back of the groups I joined and no one cared at all - most didn't even
notice i was there until i talked to them and then they were just
downright friendly so newbies don't be afraid/feel nervious about having
to take a shot at the front / my experience is that you wont be made to
    feel uncomfortable...

The best thing about it was that i must admit after mostly riding by
myself.... this added a whole new dimension to cycling for me so i
imagine i will be somewhat of a beach road regular in the future.... and
hopefully one day leading the charge!

  2. Great work Cheez! Finally we have some positive and enthusiastic feedback from someone who rides Beach Road. It is a great place to ride with so many cyclists cruising along...

There are many (and some within this forum) who really pull the [censored] out of Beach Road, but some (like me) live so close it is a shame not to use it for daily use (and not for bloody commuting either!)

Great stuff.. keep up the good work Cheezo!

good effort, especially sneaky on the return, the back of a pack was the best place to be...my lot were all hung over ( or just cagey)...and I ended up spending way to much time on the front and about the Mentone Pub, I popped, after doing Two bays and Humphreys at a pace, & dragging the front from Seaford to Mentone into that headwind wasnt very nice....

but it was a good day ...

Beach Rd is actually OK, sure it gets some heat..but mainly from those who dont get organised...or just have a hang up.

I suggest now that you have the bug, get in touch with a group ride ( talk to the LBS's) and become a regular, you'll do rides like Arthurs Seat, Safety Beach, even down to Flinders and Sorrento...with a working group it is a lot of fun, better to help the skill level with an experienced group too, and good for your head and best of all you are out there doing it!!!

    good one

I used to ride only by myself.... but once I started riding in groups... not really organised I just join onto groups and start chatting, if you ride it enough you actually get to know people. I live in South Melbourne and I reckon I am one of the luckiest people in the world, I get to live so close and ride such a great route. Sure there is other great riding in Melbourne, with regular trips out to the Hills, but Beach Rd is always there with groups to help you along when you are having a bad day. Good on ya.
