  1. Our club did a time trial race to see where we're at, unfortunately only 3 people (including me) showed up. 5 km ITT, I was using a 10+ kg bike with box section wheels (Kysrium Equipe rear) and riding on the drops, definitely not flat back position, kind of a bit loose top (Saeco jersey), no aerobars, course was somewhat rolling and there was traffic on the road, which screwed me up because two cars came just as it was my time to start, so I lost a couple seconds there. Wind was pretty much calm. Anyway, I averaged 39.2 km/hr, my fastest speed was 45.5 km/hr down the hill at the start, my slowest was 35 km/hr just after a hill. Unfortunately I didn't go out hard enough at the end as I wasn't really out of breath (I was feeling lazy, my legs hurt from yesterdays training ride), but was definitely out of breath after the hill and slowed down a bit. The first rider timed themself, and timed the remaining two riders (I went last, and started at the agreed upon time). I think the first rider got like 6.50 for the 5 km (43.9 km/hr) riding on aerobars.

  2. By the way, heres the webpage of the team I joined: CC Picaro located in Jyväskylä, Finland. www.ccpicaro.tk, I'm on the 'competition' team, first name is Jens.

What do you think, do I suck, or should I continue and race sometime this summer? I figure since I got a license I might as well.. 😄

  3. well i really hope you dont suck as i've been reading your advice on this forum for some time! one word as well - "sisu" - stick with it!

hard to know how your times compare without knowing anythign about the course, and i guess it was just one direction over such a short distance, so the wind could make a huge difference.

how do you guys manage to train through the winter... if my finnish friends are right then you have almost total darkness for a while?!

  4. Hi robkit, yeah the course was one direction, think we had a slight headwind but overall I think it was very slightly downhill.

Thanks for the compliment (about reading my advice). I'm still a relative newbie to the biking world though, but I have read quite a bit and browsed a lot of internet sites, there's a lot of good stuff out there. I've just had the good fortune of receiving some good advice from some other members here on these forums about some mechanical issues I've been having with my bike, and I'm glad I got the help.

You know the word 'sisu'! How did you come to meet finnish people? You can PM me if you want to talk privately.

You asked about the Finnish winter, and it is unpleasant, I dread it, it's cold here and just now it's starting to get up to 20 degrees. Sometimes the summers are hot but not so far this year. I trained during the winter on a stationary bicycle that shows the watts output so I was able to get a good workout during the winter. I've now trained consistently on a bike for 1 yr solid (except for 6 weeks when I had pericarditis), although my mileage is only about 8,000 km but it will go up a lot during this summer.
