  1. I just bought my first road bike....Cannondale Synaspe Sport 4. I went on my first ride on Tuesday, 12.23 miles in 53 mintues. This ride is hilly. I went on my second ride yesterday, 15.50 miles in 61 mintues. This ride is all flat with just one hill. Today I went on my thrid ride and longest so far 17.30 miles in 73 minutes this ride was the same as the first, hilly. All three rides I averaged between 15-18 mph.

I use to be a runner so I believe the training is the same. Log in the miles/base and then do some speed/intervals workouts. Does that sound about right as far as training.

Since I am new to cycling I am still experimenting with the gears and shifting. Also standing up on the bike, keeping my back straight and my knees and elbows in. And also my pedal stroke.

    Any advise would be great.

  2. There are others in this forum who are more qualified than I to offer training advice. But I would say keep the long view in mind. It takes years to develop in cycling. It's far more important that you still be out there in 2, 3, 5 years than what sort of times, speeds, etc. you attain in the coming weeks and months.

Also, keep your head up so you can see the road ahead, realize that riding in pace lines increases your risk of accident and injury manyfold, and try to find routes that minimize your exposure to traffic - cars and bikes are too often a deadly combination.

    Good luck.

+1 on Pendejo's advice, it's sound and without the long view to safety fitness and fun it's easy to get frustrated. Surf the forums for beginners advice, but most of all enjoy being on your bike 🙂
