Had an excellent ascent of Mullach na Dheiraghain on Saturday from Glen Elchaig, via Iron Lodge. A word of warning though...
On the way in we were charged by an adult heighland cow who was protecting her calves. We had to divert south to bypass her.
On our return we were charged by cattle again, only this time they continued to lumber after us for quite a long way. We've never peddaled so fast! in the end our only option was to push bikes to the river bank and then wade across the river, with bikes, to continue our journey on the other side. We then waded back again once we had passed the cattle. This episode added one hour to the journey, and gave us all wet boots.
The say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. We'll, I can assure you that a highland cattle with calves is worse!
I remember when I cycled to Iron Lodge that I had to pass a several bunches of them. I wondered if they could be a problem, now I know ... The problem I almost had was riding up behind them while the cow stood on the road. The road was wide enough for the cow and I, but only just. It wouldn't hear me until I was right there. As it swung its head to look at me, the horns made a wide arc. I thought that could have been very nasty!

They're usually OK unless you get BETWEEN a mum & her calf. If you don't know how to tell the difference between a mum & a bull .. you shouldn't be out in the hills at all....
My old dad said stand tall & wave your arms & they'll run away. Usually works, I waiting for when they react differently.....
