I'd like to replace the stem, but the trouble is that my fork and headset don't work with threadless stems, which seem to be the only style you can purchase nowadays.
First, does anyone know who sells a good threaded stem? Can't seem to find anything other than Zoom or Kalloy, but they seem cheap and dont have a low-rise or 0 degree stem.
Second, should I even consider the threadless stem adapter that Performance and Nashbar sell? If there's one area I don't wish to take chances with, it's my stem/headset/handlebar area. I'd be concerned about rigidity using that thing.

Why don't you post what you need here? I'm sure there are tons of people with old stems for threaded steerers collecting dust. You could probably pick up something good for low dollars. You might also check on ebay.

I bought one recently, but haven't yet installed it in the bike where I expect to use it. However, it seems quite sturdy. -- Rick Onanian

The threadless stem adapters are fine. Threaded stems are still available if you look around, but ones with removable clamps are rare.
I'm fairly sure that Salsa still makes quality quill stems of all lengths and angles.
