Mtb fork brake replacement question

  1. I am replacing a bent rigid front fork (26"😉. I found a matching fork (1"
    threaded), but the brake studs on the new fork are lower than the studs on
    the original fork. The original fork had cantilever brakes. Aml I correct in
    thinking that the new fork with the lower studs is for a v-brake? Is there
    anyway to adapt the new fork to use cantis, or will I have to replace the
    brakes as well as brake lever if I want to use that fork?

    "V-Brakes" and traditional cantis use the same stud placement, and the
    two types are generally interchangeable from frame to frame, as long as
    you don't run into cable routing problems.

    Your new fork is probably a "suspension corrected" model, with longer
    legs than the original. If you measure up from the dropouts to the
    studs, instead of down from the crown, I think you'll find the
    dimensions match.

    As suspension forks became more commmon, there was a trend to fit even
    rigid fork bikes with taller forks. The idea was that this would permit
    the user to upgrade to a suspension fork without making a major change
    in the steering geometry.

    The replacement fork will raise the front end of your bike a bit, and
    probably make some minor changes in the handling, but it shouldn't be a
    serious problem. It may just take a few miles of riding to become
    accustomed to the changed handling characteristics.

    Very nice, clear explanation. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to apply. The
    fork legs are the same length, only the stud placement is different. See the

    Are you sure your original fork was for 26" (559 mm) wheels? It looks
    like a hybrid/touring fork to me, especially as it has custom low rider
    mounts...those are very rarely seen on mountain bikes. Looks like a
    700c (622 mm) fork to me, or, possibly, since you're evidently in
    France, a 650B (584 mm) model. The 584 size is a _differen_ "26 inch"
    size with a substantially larger rim diameter than the 26 inch MTB size.

    If the fork on the left is actually for 26" 559 wheels, the one on the
    right must be for 24" (507 mm) wheels.

    Right you are, I had my friend look at the wheel that was mounted on the
    bike. The tire says 700c x 42. It's a hybrid (although she ays that when she
    bought it it was sold as a VTT, not a VTC.)
