Was on the way to work this morning on my road bike. I rode along the Yarra
Blvd and then down Alexandra Pde following the Yarra. Just as I was passing
the big school on the left before the right hand bend with the rock wall on
the outside of it, a red Ford Telstar lost control and shunted straight into
the wall. The female driver was fairly young and fairly shaken up, but she
didn't appear to have anything too badly wrong with her (will prob have a
sore neck tomorrow though).
The car was smashed in at the front and the rear left wheel was nearly
ripped off. She claimed that someone had cut her off but I am not so sure
about this one??
After ensuring that she was OK and a tow truck was on the way, I got back on
the bike and continued on my way to work. About 5 min later, it dawned on
me that the accident occurred only about 30 seconds before I would have been
riding there and about 1km or so before this, I had stopped and taken off my
jacket and stuffed it in my backpack (prob took about 30 seconds or so).
The piece of road in question is nice and wide and I have never felt
threatened there at all in the past. I am once again reminded that as well
as having to be safe, you have to be lucky.
I was lucky in that the weather gods had decided that Melb was due for some
warm weather and this is what made me stop to take off my jacket. I am
just glad that I did not make the news tonight.
