Is it legal for a cyclist to still keep travelling down the left hand side of stationary cars that are backed up waiting at an intersection? This is in regards to a cyclist hitting the left rear end of a car that was turning in front of him in a "keep clear" part of the road. Someone I don't know but it's on my wife's blog. And she's hassling me about it. The police apparently reckon that the cyclist is in the wrong but I can't see any thing in the road rules that state that a bike can't keep travelling down the left hand side.
Any ideas?

You can pass stationary traffic on the left providing said traffic is going straight ahead. You may NOT pass on the left of a vehicle which is indicating its intention to turn left.

Yes,
Whilst it is legal to pass them on the left, I don't recall it being legal to ram them from behind; your wife's friend may have a problem.

I better make it clear that it was the rear left handside of the car and not the rear as in in boot area. The car was turning right in front of the bike.
I got bored at work so I called the Police State Bicycle Co-ordination Unit. And the fine constable advised me that the car driver was at fault.
We then got on to talking about the accident that took the life of the old gentleman around the bay. Be both agreed that it was a tragedy but even he felt it had turned into media hype and a witch hunt against cyclists. He pointed out that 14 cyclists were killed on Victorian roads last year and there's no on going investigation into any of those tragedies.
His attitude in general has actually made me think twice about the way I think of the police.

I take it you mean you think better of them now?There are some good ones out there. Yes, even over here.
Should have seen the look on the biker cops faces when they were at my work for training, and I turned up on my push bike, as opposed to my motorcycle they are used to seeing me on.
They were impressed.
You might find that the policeman you were talking to cycles to work.
