OK, I'm watching the Tour of Qatar I recorded the other day. I'm looking at all the bikes and all the brand names and I thought "Is top flite road racing like Formula 1 or Moto GP, where the vehicles used are not available to the public?" So, can a person with a lot of money actually buy an identical bike to Tom Boonen or O'Grady?
What are most the bikes in the pro tour made of? Are there still riders who prefer all alloy?

You can basically buy the same bikes from your LBS. Some bikes are customised for very high profile riders, like Boonen.
That was from last year. I'm too lazy to find this year's Time model for Boonen, but I think he had the chain stays beefed up or something, because of his power.
Most bikes now are full carbon, although some makers can produce a high quality scandium, like Bianchi, which pro tour guys will ride. You won't find titanium in the pro's much because it is too flexy. It's very very rare to see steel these days, although Ballan rode steel at Roubaix (or was it Flanders?).
I'm sure there are others who are much more qualified to speak on this than me, but it is an interesting topic, and with about 40+ views and no comments I'd thought I'd get things rolling.
