It was going to be a trip to Capel Curig to buy a new daysack and a
gentle stroll up Moel Siabod. Turned into a trying ascent and a bit of
a gear test. The weather was exactly as advertised on mwis.org -
Snowdonia doing what it does best, horizontal rain, mist almost down
to the valleys and wind to blow you off your feet.
The new sack - Berghaus freeflow III 25+6 is great, really comfy and
no sweaty back but the rain cover's a bit of a mixed blessing in high
wind.
My feet got wet but only because I was blown off my footing into deep
mire or water several times.
The Kongur jacket was mixed. The storm flap isn't sufficient to stop
ingress of rain if it's driven from the right on a high wind. The
right hand chest pocket next to the zip got flooded though it was
zipped up. The hood is great - turns with your head and fits any or no
headgear.
Got some new gloves - nice warm fleecy lined Goretex ones but they're
absolutely useless - stopped to eat, then couldn't get the gloves back
on to wet hands. Anybody got practical solutions to that? Cold wet
hands and no handwarmer pockets on the jacket. Got back drier than
I've ever been before in such vile conditions.
Well at least I've found out how to get a whole mountain to myself -
never saw anyone else on the whole walk.
