Ohio Department of Agriculture Embargoes Jenkins "Miracle Water"
REYNOLDSBURG - Ohio Agriculture Director Fred L. Dailey today embargoed 730
gallons of bottled water at the Leroy Jenkins Evangelistic Association from
its leased offices at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel at 2124 S. Hamilton
Rd., Columbus, after finding that water purchased from the association last
week contained coliform bacteria.
Also today, Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David Johnson granted the
department a temporary restraining order that prevents Jenkins and his
associates from selling the unlabeled, misbranded, and adulterated water. A
hearing on a motion for a preliminary injunction has been set for July 2 at
8:30 a.m. in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
Last year, the association was found guilty by Delaware Municipal Court for
failing to obtain a license from the Ohio Department of Agriculture to
bottle his popular "miracle water." He was ordered to pay $500 plus court
costs on each of two counts of "bottling license required," with $400 on
each count suspended, provided the association obtained a bottling license.
Other charges for misbranding and adulteration were dropped. Since then, the
association has not applied for a license through the department.
The department launched the investigation of the association earlier this
month after reading in a Columbus Monthly article that the water was again
being sold.
The department's Division of Food Safety performs regulatory inspections at
food manufacturing and processing facilities to help assure foods and soft
drinks are safe and properly labeled.
