Michael Creed SFGP photos

Mike finished a (short) lap down. I don't know why they listed him as
a DNF, except that he ended up losing the KOM prize to McCartney. So
the officials probably decided to DNF him since he didn't win the prize
anyway.

The officials tried to pull him from the race with the rest of the
dropped riders, but he protested "I've got $1500 riding on this!" So
they let him continue, and it seems a couple guys who were riding with
him at the time also got to stay in.

Since his group had been lapped on the finishing circuits, it was a
little confusing for us spectators. It certainly looked like Mike was
just riding to the finish, although it also looked like he was the
first chase group. Took a while to figure out.

By the way, what is the definitive word on Michael not finishing? My guess
is that they pulled all lapped riders on the final circuit, so the course
could be re-opened as quickly as possible (and Michael was lapped right at
the top of Taylor on the final lap, if I recall correctly).

The fact that he was DNF'd suggests that whether or not he continued to
ride, he got the meatball regardless. The fact that he got lapped
suggests he _should_ have been DNF'd.

Creed has some sympathy from me, and I have to admire his huge early
break, but if you get lapped by the field, you get lapped by the field.
KOM is a finisher's prize, meatball, and you go home.
