  1. Hi,

This may be a basic question, but having just invested in a Garmin
Legend and now wanting to load some maps, I can't decide whether to
purchase the complete Landranger set, or look at the areas (Beacons)
and trails (Ridgeway, Thames Path) that I really want to walk. I am in
no way a map expert, one of the reasons I wanted the Garmin. Do the
trail versions have waypoints already loaded, making the route easier
to follow? If I purchased the Landranger pack, then I would need to
create my own route on the trails I wanted to walk?

    TIA

I don't think anything iwll be pre-laoded, you'll need to create your
own routes and them upload them to the GPS.

The only maps that can be loaded onto a Garmin are Garmin Mapsource ( except
for the technically minded ).These are excellent for driving/autorouting
etc. but no good for ' countryside walks' .You will need to find your route
on M-M,put in some waypoints and download to GPS.This gives a list of
    waypoints to follow .

There are several things you can load to the Garmin GPS handset. You can
load Maps (but only Garmin** ones, and there are none for the UK with
footpaths etc. on), you can load waypoints, which may be arranged to
form a route, or you can load a track (a bunch of dots which form a
line). There is a small limit on number of waypoints, but each can have
a lot of detail .. there is a much larger limit on track points, but
each one is just an X/Y location.

If you buy something like Memory Map, Anquet, or Tracklogs , you can use
the mapping that you buy (OS 1:25k or 1:50k) as a 'background' on your
PC and place the waypoints or draw the tracks on it .. then upload the
resulting waypoints, routes, or tracks to the GPS (the map won't upload
... although you can print a copy and take it with you).

For walking lowland areas with cultivation going on, the 1:25k maps are
much nicer than the 1:50k, since they show field boundaries (often
dated, but still better than nothing). Obviously when the OS map is on
your PC you can zoom in/out (and print 1:25k maps at 1:10k, which I
often do) but you can't add detail that isn't there.

(** Or homebrew .. I am working through mapping the rights of way (FPs &
    BWs) of South Shropshire
    www.quik.clara.co.uk/maps
... which won't help you at all .. but maybe someone has done the areas
    you care about).
