Melbourne MTB trails

Hello

Can anyone recommend decent dirt trails for taking mountain bikes in
Melbourne? I live in the Northern Suburbs and have close access to the
Merri Creek bike path, but I don't know of any decent trails suitable for
MTB..

Not much specifically in the northern suburbs. You can rid some tracks from
Greensborough to Blue Lake which is supposed to be a good singletrack route,
although fairly short. Then further afield there is Mt Dissapointment and
Kinglake for some great forest trails. Woodlands Homestead at Greenvale has
a network of beginner trails. The Main Yarra Trail from Fairfield to
Westerfolds has a series of single track paths parallel to it, just ride out
on the formed trail and look for any little 'rabbit runs' off it. They wind
about a fair bit, but generally follow the river and include some fun gully
crossings.

Your best source for trail ideas is to get hold of either of the two ORCA
books (Off Road Cycling Adventures) available from most good bike shops.

It's an old route that probably isn't rideable in its entirety, but trying to follow it will introduce you to Studley Park, where there's quite a few short trails that are a bit of fun.

I think you nailed it Peter. If you are looking for Nthn Subs rides. Keep
an eye out for the small paths leading off the Yarra Trail. There is no
shortage of these from Beyond Westerfolds right thru to Fairfield/Kew. You
can also break off the Plenty River trail at Plenty River Drive, over the
bridge, right into to Kariboo Gv and into the Reserve. From here you can go
to Blue Lake or across to Plenty Rd. No shortage of Kangaroos out here.
