Thanks to all for your suggestions I have made a note of them all and I will be looking at them all in depth over the next few weeks and months with a view to planning future trips.
A friend suggested the Peak District but I will be there in Castleton for a few days in March, he however suggested a little further south maybe around the Dove Dale area. If anyone could suggest a nice town or village in that area with a couple of pubs and somewhere to get a bite to eat we would be very interested. We where thinking of trying to get a static caravan or camping or even a cottage so anyone who has stayed in the area and could recommend somewhere we would once again be gratefully for your suggestions.

I like Hartington, at the top end of Dove Dale, where I stay in the Youth Hostel. This is one of the better hostels with a selection of small private rooms to stay in (not all dorms) and a decent restaurant for meals which is open to the public. They also serve local ales. In the village are a couple more pubs for eating out as well as plenty more in the immediate area. The George pub at Alstonefield gave me a nice meal a few years ago and is within walking distance of Hartington. You could walk alongside the Manifold River to Wetton Mill teashop, climb up to Thors Cave and see the views and then loop back via Alstonefield to Hartington.

Nick Thanks Nick, sounds the kind of village we where thinking of but we have never used a Youth Hostel befor, might try and find a cottage (for 4 adults) thereabouts or static caravan even a campsite.
