SkySports news are reporting the retirement from top level cycling of British olympic medallist Max Sciandri.
Max, as Phil Liggett never tired of telling us was born in Derby of Italian parents and when he was overlooked for the worlds Squadra in the early 90's took out a UK racing licence.
Despite his many successes in a BCF jersey, I will remember Max most for his attacking Tour stage win into St. Etienne in (i think 1995).
Max was a stalwart of the MG-Technogym and Francaise Des Jeux teams in the 90's before seeing out the latter part of his career with Lampre and this season CSC.

One of the most stylish riders around in the 90s....saw his powerful win at the Leeds International in 1995, the same year he won his only Tour stage. Ferretti's old MG-Technogym squad certainly set the blueprint for today's Fassa Bortolo.
Great words in the1993 Tour after losing from a small group to an unheralded Bjarne Riis, "Beaten by a guy like Riis..." Magic! Seems Johan Museeuw wasn't the only fast man at the pointy end of the race that day...
Second that, hope a career in the team car beckons because along with the great Pascal Richard, Max was on of the most intelligent, canny riders in the peloton.
