  1. hi, I cycle almost everyday, to and from a town near me (I work there) its about 6 or 7 miles away so I get between 12 and 14 miles a day, but I was just wondering on how to train for a long trip?

I mean, in the summer Im wanting to (hopefully with some freinds, dont really want to go on my own) cycle from NY to Toronto, I live in Britain, so its as much for the experience of another country (well two) as a cycling trip.

Im pretty fast on my bike, and I got a new bicycle this winter, its a nice racing bicycle. Ive never ridden in any races, dont think there are any in my area, so thats annoying.

But anyway, what would be the maximum distance a cyclist (not going at top speed, as I would be worn out after the first few days) to travel in a month?

I worked it out, well rough estimate that the distance would be between 500 and 600 miles (as I simply did distance between the cities, rather than following roads). Also does anyone know about the terrain between the two cities? Im not going to be doing it soon, not until July, so that I can get some money organised to get out there, and come back and survive while Im there hehe.

I think Ill also have to buy a bicycle while Im out there. Im gonna be flying to New York, meet up with some freinds (with other freinds if they join me) get a good quality bicycle (I dont know what prices are in America either hehe) and set off to Toronto (Im going to Toronto as I have family there, so I can dump my bicycle on them, or sell it hehe).

I Think I would have a month to do it, maybe a little bit more, but not much. Work isnt a problem for me, as Im joining the Army in September, so I dont need to worry about having a job when I get back, so thats some comfort.

I might have a bit more than a month, but Im setting a month as a goal, although depending upon replies that is likely to change.

I think on unlikely terrain Im looking at between 10 and 15 mph, but of course that is only an estimate, as I could have good days and bad days.

Anyway any replies would be great, for any advice. Also, what type of bike would be best? I think a touring bike would be best, as Im not intending to cycle off road, but also Ill need to sturdy frame to carry a tent, clothes, sleeping bag, food etc. So racing bike is out of the question.

Anyway I have to go to bed.

As long as it's not a short distance racing road bike, but one you can do a century on without giving up because of a sore body, then that should be good.

As much as you can possibly do man. Generally, if your event that you want to train for is say 2 hours, you should be doing at least one 2-3 hour ride a week. I have no idea what you should do if your event is 8 hours though. My guess is that you should still be doing long rides, say at least one 5 hour ride a week.

It should be pretty flat terrain there. How long is this ride? How many days is it? At 10-15mph as you sad over 500-600mi that's roughly 50hours of ride time...

So divide that by the number of days to find how much you want to ride each day, then use that as a basis for your training. If it ends up being like 4 hours a day, I'd say then in June you should be able to do 4 4 hour rides a week without feeling bad or cramping, and then take it easy the last week or two before you want to do this epic ride. Remember that Gatorade is absolutely useless to you; you will need to bring something much more substantial to eat along the way. A cold sandwich or anything that's healthy with a lot of carbs and some protein and various other nutrients...Long rides are a lot more draining, and inadequate energy and nutrition will hinder your ability to prepare for a long trip like that.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Thanks for that, Ill start training up now.

At first I thought it would take up to a month, but Im starting to think now that I can do it well within a month, but Ill start doing some proper training and then Ill be able to see what I can do.
