Mavic SL Wheelset

have a bike shop take'em apart and look around inside. Even tho the
rear hub is cheezy, it should spin fairly smoothly.

Yeah, I meant the Ksyriums SL.

I guess maybe my question should of been; should there be any play
whatsever in those tiny catridge bearings...? Seems to me there
shouldn't be-- simply because they're not like a wheel bearing on a car
where you pre-load a conical bearing. I had a bike mechanic the other
day tell me the bearings need to be replaced at 5000KM intervals-- seems
extreme considering the durability of the average Shimano set-up.

Maybe I should start a new topic-- ball and cup hub vs. cartridge
bearing hub?

There should not be. Adjust while on the bike, with QR tightened. I'm
more than a little amused at these wheels. Like many Campag, shimano
and Mavic as well as other wheels, I wonder what ya get for the
$1000+....

simply because they're not like a wheel bearing on a car

Been done. Cart bearings offer some advantages but none are as smooth
as cup and ball. A little maintenance can go a long way toward long
term use of hubs.
