center of the ding and then both sides gradually getting it straight.

as good as new depending on how carefully you do this.

I took a fairly big dent out of an older rim using this technique. It
now looks straight to the naked eye but there is still a slight thump
when braking - similar to a badly pinned rim joint. I can live with it
though.
