A massive air and ground seach is under way in the Highlands. 22
mountain rescue, police and Air Force teams amounting to over 100
personnel are currently searching a vast area of mountain and moorland
between Lochinver, Ullapool and Dingwall for a missing twin engined
Cessna (sp?) aircraft and its pilot. The plane, carrying mail from the
Outer Hebrides, disappeared off the radar screen immediately before
people from Ullapool and as far East as Dingwall heard a massive
explosion.
The search appeared to centre on the Strath Vaich/Strath
Mulzie/Inverlael area as Julie and I walked Beinn a'Chaisteal. The
radio vehicle, belonging to Dundonnel MR, was operating from NH347754
near the head of Loch Vaich and as we drove home a MR ambulance turned
from the Garve road towards Achnasheen, probably widening the search
area.
We noted two MR vehicles, four helicopters, two police dog teams and the
radio vehicle as we cycled along Strath Vaich. The radio operator said
that there were 6 helicopters in total involved.
This is quite clearly a massive operation pulling out all the stops in
an attempt to find the missing aircraft. My hopes go with them for a
successful operation.
