Last night on a 30 mile ride, I decided to visit my favourite local place, this remote spot where
no one walks to, as it's a mile walk to a dead end and then back again, so it provides a great
place for a bit of solitude on a summer's evening watching the shipping on the Humber and the
wading birds .

As it was starting to get dark, I headed back, only to find the locks gates open here. The
Zeebrugge ferry had left the docks and they decided to leave the flaming gates open, even though
it's a right of way.

Not wanting to trespass on the dock and use the other set of gates, I had to wait until some speck
on the horizon turned up and enter the lock, which left me there for over an hour. The infuriating
thing was, the Rotterdam ferry was barely 100 metres away in the river and I could smell all the
gourmet food wafting across from the restaurants
(Mr Pedantic says the wind was easterly last night and you were east of the ferry, so you couldn't
have smelt it.) Yeah well, I could hear the cutlery.
