Marin Bear Valley Ahead Size

I'd be amazed if it wasn't 1\1/8 - my '94 Kona is.

You would probably be better off with 80mm if you can get it, but 100
will probably be OK.

can I measure it without removing the existing fork first?

I assume youve already got ahead forks? (my 94 Bear Valley has ye olde
forks and quill stem).

If so, remove the cap from the top of the forks / on top of the stem
(usually with an allen key).

DO NOT loosen your stem bolts while this cap is off, between them they
hold the fork in place - not a big job to refit, but youve said you dont
want to remove them ...

Measure the diameter of the hole in the stem, which is the same as the
diameter of the fork tube inside it.

any doubts, ask your LBS.

I'm in the same boat as Phil, got an 95 or 96 Bear Valley (not sure as I
bought it second hand) and love the thing so much Im thinking about fitting
sus forks rather than buy a new bike.

Measured diameter of the stem (older quill type) and it's 1". Can I fit a
new 1 1/8 " Aheadset and forks or wont the headtube be large enough?
