Cycling is pretty active in your area from my understanding and you have some good training terrain. I recommend joining a club and doings some group rides, then some club races and if you like your progress and result you may want to take it to the next level and find a good coach.
You will have to start on the bottom rung as a racer until you gain experience and prove your skill level.
I know some pros and to get to this level you must sacrifice a lot of time and don't expect to get rich. -
Yep, joining a club is the first step. Get stuck in with some good guys and learn everything you can from them. Be careful not to go over the top at first because injuries and crashes suck. 🙁 But take your time, build up strength, fitness and know-how, and you'll soon know if you have what it takes to go the distance.
Btw, becoming a pro cyclist is as much mental as physical. Being able to make yourself suffer mercilessly is a required ability. I'd hazard a guess that the great majority of guys who want to make the big time but never get there fail because they lack motivation to train, suffer, race for others and be the tree that bends but does not break. Very few with that desire don't make it because of lack of physical talent. Cycling is a very different sport to other sports in that regard, so be prepared for that. It's possibly the toughest sport there is.
