Also, ESPN this morning (July 28) did a nice piece comparing Lance's 5 straight wins to other more mainstream US sports like Bjorn Borg's winning Wimbledon 5x straight (pretty amazing since he had some very good competition and is one of my favorite tennis players), that only a few athletes have won the premier event in his/her sport 5x in a row. Good piece.
I was also listening to sports talk radio on Sunday and John Feinstein (a sports writer who has written several good sports books) was saying how he thinks the TDF is the hardest event is sports and that Lance might well be the greatest athlete ever.
I am willing to bet that more US sports fans are respectful of the accomplishment even if they do not understand cycling. People who know little about basketball or hockey recognized the greatest of Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky, respectively.
