My acupuncturist gave me some small magnets to use for my low back pain. The magnets are very small discs (less than 1/4" across) but are extremely strong. I put two or three over the areas of pain (north side of magnet against skin) and one on the outside of each ankle (south side against skin). They seem to be helping quite a bit.
I use them twice a day for two or three hours at a time. Does anyone know if there have been any studies to determine if they are safe?
I don't see how it could cause harm, MRI is used on people with harming them. MRI magnetic fields are a million times stronger that your tiny magnets.
IMHO IF magnets are effective in reducing pain, it is because of phenomena called magnetohydrodynamics. This process MAY increase blood flow in small capillaries and thus decrease inflammation.
