I love living in the mountains, but have finally decided to throw in the towel and get an indoor
trainer for when it's too ugly to ride. I have access to a couple different trainers locally, and
wondered if:
How loud (and how "good"😉 are the Minoura HyperMag or RD850 trainers? Is there any reason to spend
the extra $50 for the HyperMag?
I don't know what the "HyperMag" is, and you'll have to excuse my ignorance, I'm really new to all
this, but I got a Minoura RD850 last Christmas and I love it. I used it on my Mountain Bike last
winter, which was kinda tricky because I've got disc brakes, and the rim on my Mtn Bike was way
thin, and I had to really make sure it was lined up right before I felt confortable getting on it.
Now I've hooked up my Trek road bike that I got this summer to it, and it's great. With the road
bike, I really noticed that it was pretty darn quiet, relatively speaking. My office where I have it
set up is across the hall catty-corner from my bedroom, and I can close my door, while the wife
sleeps in the other room and can't hear a thing.

I got the Mag trainer for a gift, so I'm pretty sure cost was the issue there. My mom got it for
me for Christmas, and I'm pretty sure she'd have a tough time justifying buying something that
expensive that she wasn't even sure what it did...lol. She had to ask me a couple times, "Are
you *sure* you want this thing? Will you be able to use it? etc" (I'm not sure what she thought,
but when she saw me set it up and ride it, you could tell a lightbulb went off, like she "got"
what it was.).
I'd say, if you've got the money, always buy better, not cheaper.

when riding's impossible and the skiing is bad...
Oh, er...in that case, *maybe* the mag trainer then. I'm riding on mine everyday, and it's
doing fine.
Hope I helped.
