  1. My Gahd Mother is one of those urban gardeners that can -- and will -- grow
anything without effort. Her magnificent gardens (flowers, vegetables, and
fruits) are riotous rainbows of color, cornucopias of smells, and a Zen
Retreats of peace and solitude. This past spring ('04), she learned all
about the different lettuces that one can grow. One item she grew without
once breaking a sweat from her 89-yo chassis was mâche. I am gifted
throughout the different seasons with anything in abundance; this plant was
very abundant. All of my three daughter-units are also in love with this
simple weed, happily picking through a salad bowl to single out the
    treasure-trove of leaves.

I learned that to mask the smoky flavor and succulent tasting leaves is
sacrilegious and likely to bring out the peasants with their pitchforks and
torches. (Don't bother with a balsamic; it's too heavy a vinegar.)

The most frequent dressing I've been asked to use with this leafy goldmine
is an orange vinaigrette. 1/4 cup EVOO, 1/8 cup OJ (fresh-squeezed), salt
and pepper to taste, 2 Tbs. Lemon Juice, 2 Tbs. Red Wine Vinegar (Star
    brand)

If you can find this leafy delight at a farmers market, purchase some! You
    won't be disappointed.

I tried this lettuce last year when someone recommended it to me. They
sell it at Trader Joe's. It's excellent!
