I hope Ludo Dierckxsens can find a team for 2005.
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2004/dec04/dec20news He seems to
be such a great guy who really just loves to ride. I was watching the 1998
Paris-Roubaix last night and it was good to see him fight so hard to keep
Ballerini's wheel. It would be nice to see him go out ala Duclos.

You mean like in the 2001 Rhonde when he and his teammate Sciandri were in the winning break and he refused to give Max, a much better sprinter, a lead out?

So how's he different in that regard from 99% of all the other pros? He's
still a great personality and his story of getting a break to start as a pro
later in life than most is a good one. He has the genuine attitude of
someone who loves his work and lets it show without pretense. The fact that
his isn't an arrogant asshole (American or otherwise) just makes him more
likeable.

Do you think that maybe it had something to do with Max bridging up to the
lead group containing Ludo. Even so, the reports were that Ludo worked his
ass off for Max but Max decided to lead out the sprint. From CyclingNews:

"The race was far from over though, as many of the favourites (Tchmil,
Sciandri, Wesemann, Bartoli, Planckaert, Vainsteins, Sorensen) were in a
larger peloton, 1'00 behind. In the lead, Lampre's Ludo Dierckxsens was
"having fun" as he later recalled, and led the break up almost every climb,
helping to keep the bunch at bay. Perhaps the critical moment in a
constantly changing race came at 41 km to go, when Max Sciandri (Lampre),
Gianluca Bortolami (Tacconi) and Geert Van Bondt (Mercury) escaped the
peloton, which stopped working. These three caught some of the stragglers
ahead, and then the front riders on the steep, cobbled Taaienberg (climb 12,
37 km to go)..........
.........
There were several attacks in the leading group, but there was too much at
stake to let anything go. Ludo Dierckxsens rode his heart out to keep Max
Sciandri in a winning position, but unfortunately it didn't work. Sciandri
led out the uphill sprint with 400 metres to go, but was quickly passed by
Denis Zanette. On Zanette's right was Bortolami, lurking in the shadow of
the barriers, and the powerful Italian moved past with less than 100 metres
to go. On the other side, Erik Dekker was finishing very fast and got past
Zanette but needed another few metres to get Bortolami. "

But, of course, you knew all of this when you wrote and posted, right? Stick
to moronformus.

And even if you've met him you might not know ****. Dahmer and Bundy were
quite affable. I'll bet you can be too, if you try hard enough. :)

I think I am in the moronformus, dumbass.

Sciandri took the opportunity to bridge up because Ludo had no chance in the sprint. At least Max did. Sciandri came put publicly after the race and said Ludo wouldn't work for him. Your superficial press quote offers nothing.

From memory of the 2001 final, I don't think Ludo had it in him to lead out
anyone after all the work he did on Max's behalf. It certainly wasn't in
Max's best interest to dry to lead out and win an uphill sprint from 400
yards out. I suspect that he was tired and pisses and just talking smack.

Watch the race again and I think you'll see that Ludo did quite a lot of
work for Scandri. The press quote accurately reflects my memory of the
race. I don't recall reading any reply by Ludo to the accusation by Scandri
nor do I recall reading that accusation by Scandri. Got a source for it?

but i think i've figured it out now.

He was quoted in one of the cycling rags at the time. I can't imagine management at Lampre being too happy at their two guys finishing at the back of the break of a group of mediocre finishers.

Why don't you go ask Ludo himself? You can stutter in his presence here:

Derby, you're the one who raised the issue of Ludo in the sprint with Max.
I would hope that you have a source.

I don't collect old mags but it would be either ProCycling News or Cycle Sport.

I'm glad to see you still have hope. If you have those mags buried under your kleenex collection, it's in there.
