Some cyclists use motor oil. It works well as a lube but attracts a lot of dirt. If you don't mind frequent cleaning, it would be cheap.

If you cut motor oil 1:2 with mineral spirits (1 part motor oil to two parts mineral spirits), apply it the night before you ride, and wipe the surface of the chain clean with a rag before you ride, the oil will penetrate beter and will attrack a lot less dirt (because the surface, where the lub is not needed, is clean and dry).

i reckon all the fancy bike shop lubes are a ripoff 🙂

I use all-purpose stuff from the supermarket.
