I have two rides I do regularly. Indoors on a stationary trainer I do a 1hr session with a highest HR of about 152 and an average HR of about 100. Outdoors I do a 2hr ride with a highest HR of about 172 and an average of about 130.
My resting HR is 40 and the highest recorded is 180, which makes the average for the indoor session 43% and for the outdoor session 64%. But I am more tired after the 1hr indoor session than after the 2hr outdoor session.
Now I do realize that outdoors one uses more muscles doing steering and suchlike things but surely the more than 20% difference must have some other explanation?
Is it possible that my indoor cycling max HR is in fact less than 160 as opposed to my recorded max outdoor HR of 180? It certainly feels that the 152 indoors is closer to max than the 172 outdoors.
