It may be a reflection of your general nutritional health.
If you've been eating a generally high-carb diet, high in sugars and
refined flours, you may be somewhat depleted of B vitamins, folate,
vitamin C, etc. Refined carbs will do that over time. We evolved with
the most of our sugars and starches coming from fresh fruits and
veggies containing lots of vitamins, minerals and good nutrients. The
metabolizing of sugars and starches is done with the help of some of
the nutrients contained in the produce. If you eat too many refined
sugars or starches and not enough vitamins, the body has to get these
vitamins from somewhere to metabolize the sugars, it gets it from your
bodies vitamin stores, leaving you in a vitamin depleted state.
Now, when you go onto a low-carb diet, you may be restricting wholefood
nutrient-dense foods. Especially on Atkins induction. If you are
somewhat depleted to begin with, you may be really depleted after a
couple of weeks of induction. That is why Atkins recommends some
vitamin supplementation.
I would suggest a minimum of 3 1000 mg per day of Vitamin C, taken
thruout the day. A good b vitamin complex, stress formula, two or three
per day, preferably early in the day with food (ie. not before bed).
And folic acid or folate, up of 2 mcg or more per day. Cod liver oil is
excellent too.
Make sure to eat plenty of good, fresh, whole food produce. It contains
the nutrition that we need. It contains the fibre that we keep hearing
about in the news. It is all naturally low carb. And it tastes great.
Any symptoms like excessive hot flashes will diminish once you are in a
good nutritional staus.
