Yesterday the Unfit Family took part, with loads of others, in the EDP Ride for
Life in aid of East Anglian Children's Hospices. The cycling club we belong to
sponsors EACH and helps organise the ride. It was glorious. We did the 33 mile
on-road circuit.
Started from Santon Downham in the Thetford Forest at just after 8am, route
took us up to Mundford, past the Iceni Brewery to Cockley Cley and the half-way
house at Beachamwell with its thatched roof church. There was a refreshment
stop with tea, coffee, water & home-made cakes. Then on to Oxborough, down to
Weeting, Brandon and back to Santon Downham.
It was quite lovely. The day was *warm* but the light cloud cover stopped it
from being too hot. Hardly any wind, so it was ideal cycling conditions. The
morning dappled sunshine through the forest was just the thing to raise the
spirits at the start of the ride. Getting out on to quiet country lanes, lined
with hedgerows full of hawthorn in blossom gave a truly wondrous scent to the
air for much of the ride. Norfolk is quiet beautiful at this time of year and
is perfect cycling country.
Our good deed for the day was to sort out the saddle on the MTB of a guy having
trouble and in pain as a result of said saddle being incorrectly set for him.
The second half of his ride was more comfortable than the first, once Vernon
had used a spanner from my toolkit to sort out the problem.
At the start Nathan sped off away from his slow parents, but we met at the
halfway point to keep him stocked up with supplies of cake. Once he was
refilled, he sped off again and finished quite a bit before his mum & dad. At
the end he was refuelled by a large portion of black cherry ripple ice cream
and a chocolate flake...
It would have been good to do a second lap, so to speak, but as Nathan needed
to get home to do the dreaded revision for his GCSEs, we stuck to the one.
Today looks like another glorious day and I can't wait to get out there on the
bike again.
Cheers, helen s
