I'm a beginner at commuting and riding into the city who's trying to get back into road riding. The cheap tires which came on my bike (2011 Scott S40) have worn out on the sidewall. Not sure how because the brakes are aligned and the air pressure is checked before every ride but it still happened. Anyway the tires that I was riding are sized 700x23 and I'm wanting to put some good quality puncture resistant tires on the bike. I'm looking at the Gatorskins and I think they'll work well. My only question is would going with a larger size tire, either a size 25 or 28, prolong the life of the tires? I don't care about a cushy ride, I'm used to riding long distance on road tires at higher pressure for speed, I just want the tires to last as long as possible. I'm aware that no tire is flat proof and if I hit glass or a nail I'll get a flat but I want something that won't just wear out from regular use.

people seem to recommend Continental's, for commuting maybe a 700 x 25 would be better. they have a good range of models and prices for you to choose from, Gatorskins isn't one of them ?

Slightly wider tires will not give you longer wear life. If you are planning on commuting and will be carrying a payload wider tires will hold up better. Gatorskins have a good puncture resistance reputation and you would most likely be served well by them. As far as the life span of the tire. Road conditions, tire pressure and combined wieght all play in to how long it will last. One poster in the past who weighs 120lbs claims to have over 5000 miles on a set of tires. At 170 lbs I get about 2000 miles from mine.
