  1. What can you guys recommend? I don't have anything right now aside from car mechanics tools.

Here are some of the things I'm looking at:

    Tool set

    Tool set and stands

  2. Either of those would be very nice indeed. Park Tools make some excellent stuff.

If you're just going to be working on your own bikes, you may be baulking at the price a bit. The cheaper tool sets, like this one:

are not as high a quality, but they are perfectly acceptable for occasional DIY jobs. They don't feel as nice to use as the Park Tools ones, but they're good enough.

I have one of these kits to service my three bikes and the tools have been cheap and cheerful over the past few years (except for the chain tool, which is a piece of junk) The only tools I've needed to buy separately were a cable cutter, and a "Hollowtech II" style external BB cup tool (looks like it comes with one of these now)

  3. Most tool kits come with a lot of things you'll never need. A good set of allen wrenches will get you 90% of the way there. Throw in a chain tool and the bb,cassette, and crank tools that are specific to your bike.

  4. Agreed, most times this is going to suffice:
    T-handle hex wrenches
    cassette lockring tool
    chain whip
    bottom bracket tool

  5. and maybe a spoke wrench as well.
