Is there a difference in the length of bar tape supplied by different manufacturers of tape? On the weekend I wrapped some 46cm bars that also have quite a long reach on them, and was about 2" short on each side of the bars. I just grabbed some bar tape I had lying around named "Bike Ribbon". By unwrapping the tape and doing it again using almost no overlap, I was able to get full coverage, but I can't see that lasting very long before I start to see bare handlebar through gaps in the tape.
Profile tape is longer than Cinelli, seems to stretch better without breaking when you put it on. It's also slightly cushier so it feels better. On the downside, it doesn't come in as many colors and may be harder to find.
For 44 cm bars I typically I trim 10-15 cm off the end of each roll.

I haven't had an opportunity to verify this, but I was told that Profile Design tape is longer, than some of the others. I was wrapping 40cm bars and was short using Ciclolinea. If the link doesn't work, do a search in rec.bicycles.tech using "Handlebar Tape - Lengths???
Profile brand tape has always seemed longer than other brands of tape for me.
