Suspended sentence for driver who killed a north-west cyclist
A Magistrate has found a woman who ran over and killed a cyclist in
the north west six years ago was "highly negligent".
66-year-old Lesley Alison Jeffries was sentenced today for causing
death by negligent driving.
Cyclist Ronald Cook died of severe head injuries after being hit from
behind by Jeffries on the Bass Highway near Ulverstone in 2001.
Magistrate Tim Hill said there was no evidence Jeffries was driving at
a dangerous speed, but she was highly negligent in not seeing another
road user who was plainly visible.
Magistrate Hill said a jail sentence was necessary to deter other
drivers, and because the consequences for Mr Cook's family had been
"catastrophic".
But he suspended the sentence, because Jeffries has been diagnosed
with seven different psychiatric problems since the accident.
He also disqualified Jeffries from driving for two years and fined her
$500.
