    1. This isn't much of a mountain biking group. You'd have better luck on a
group devoted to mountain biking. The group rec.bicycles.offroad looks
pretty dead. Maybe somebody else can make a good suggestion.
    2. I know you don't want to break any bones, but there's a certain daredevil
quality to mountain biking that's necessary for full enjoyment.
    3. Good luck. Have fun.

The mtbr.com forums are as good a place as any these days. There's also
alt.mountain-bike, but that isn't the technique resource that r.b.o-r
used to be, even if you can see past the trolls.

The record for a bunny hop is up near 50 inches, but by guys on bmx's.
I've a couple mates who can clear 3 feet and I'm happy when I clear a
foot. There's a whole bunch of ways for clearing logs out on the trail
and just hopping over them takes a fair bit of speed and commitment
and can go really bad if you miss time it, but feels great when you
land it. There's a bunch of other methods for clearing logs, one of
which includes using the chain ring to power over larger logs. This
video shows one way to get over large logs...

If you really want to 'fly' over logs look for launch sections out the
trail, things that'll help give you some boost or lift. As you jump
higher you'll need to commit harder and the crashes will start to
really hurt, body armour is always worth a thought.
