Landslide storm caused £1m damage to region

THE August storm that caused the Lochearnhead landslide, engulfing the
A85 at Glen Ogle, Perthshire, also resulted in more than £1 million of
damage to the surrounding countryside, the local footpaths authority
revealed yesterday.
Stirling Council says pathways and bridges swept away by the
torrential rain that hit Ben Vorlich, south of Loch Earn, will take
more than six months to repair.
The authority issued a statement about the state of some of central
Scotland’s most popular walks and beauty spots last night, after
spending a fortnight assessing the destruction.
According to the council, Glen Ample, a popular area for walkers that
lies between Ben Vorlich and Strathyre Forest, was devastated and
burns that had run along the surface now run through 20ft gorges.
The estate track was scoured out, walls and fences were removed and
the footbridge at Glenample Farm was broken up and "relocated" a mile
away.
Widespread damage was also reported in nearby Edinample and at
Callander, where a wall of water destroyed all the bridges in the
upper reaches of the Keltie Water.
More than 50 travellers had to be airlifted to safety when two massive
landslides blocked the popular tourist route in Glen Ogle, near
Lochearnhead. Torrents of water swamped roads and threatened to flood
homes.
