The founder of Indiana University's Little 500 bicycle race has died.
Howard Wilcox died yesterday at the age of 82. Wilcox was president of the public-relations firm
Howard S Wilcox Incorporated.
He also was instrumental in founding the Indianapolis 500 festival and the Indiana System for
Statewide Medical Education.
Wilcox was named for his father, who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1919.
Wilcox went on to graduate from I-U. He also worked for Central Newspapers Incorporated, the former
parent company of The Indianapolis Star.
Survivors include his wife, four sons, two stepsons and two stepdaughters. Memorial contributions
may be made to the I-U Student Foundation, in care of the Little 500 Scholarship Fund.
