The triple front derailleur on my touring bike was positioned about
1/2" to 3/4" above the outer ring so it could shift the half step 48-45
front chainrings. Shifted just fine.

Just put your front derailleur and crankset on the bike and it will
shift fine. The only important thing is to get the angle of the front
derailleur correct. Height on the seat tube is irrelevant within
reason. It can't be so low as to rub the outer ring and it can't be so
high it pulls the chain up too much when on the big cog in back.

Increasing capacities; the real issue is with reaching the middle or inner
rings. If you've got an old-style 40-46 or so, the cage can be miles above
the 46 and still have no trouble with the 40; setup on something like a
52/34 compact is a bit trickier, no?

Considering once upon a time, front ders weren't even a whole cage and
yes, with gentleness and finesse, you can get any chain up and down the
chainrings. But if you want to just push lever, expect chain to get to
the big ring w/o being thrown off the outside, regardless of skill and
finesse, just slam it up there, it needs to be pretty close.
