I did a forum search and found there too be surpisingly few threads dealing with bike lights.
Since I'm using my bike to commute I need some lights. I've looked at a few sites, but I'm not really sure on what to look for. If someone could give a primer on what's important to consider, that would help frame my shopping.
For instance, if someone were to ask for what to look for in a hard drive, I'd say:
- Interface is most important. There's SATA and ATA. SATA is newer and faster, but make sure your motherboard supports it.
- Next there's the size. As you go up in size you pay less per gigabyte, but it's not a significant savings. Go with whatever suits your needs.
- Go with a 7200RPM drive. There are slower and faster ones. The 5000RPM ones are basically obsolete, and the 10k ones are a bit expensive. The speedier access is probably worth it though, if you have the money.
- There are very few differences between the major manufacturers, Maxtor, Western Digital, Hitachi, and Seagate. Anyone who tells you one manufacturer is bad because he bought a bad drive or two is stupid. All of them have shipped bad drives, and no matter who you buy from you have a small chance it'll be defective. Last I checked Hitachi and Seagate drives were more expensive than the other two brands, but basically more quiet, cooler, perhaps more reliable. Western Digital and Maxtor are what're in most desktops though, and they work just fine.
I'm hoping someone can outline the lighting market for me, since right now I'm a bit lost with all the variations between bulbs, weights, generators?, manufacturers, batteries, etc.
