ATHENE - Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel zal haar olympische titel tijdrijden in principe woensdag toch verdedigen. Haar deelname was onzeker na de valpartij zondag tijdens de wegwedstrijd. Na een goede nachtrust bleken de bij de buiteling opgelopen kneuzingen mee te vallen.
Van Moorsel heeft daarom na uitgebreid onderzoek door onder anderen de teamarts en fysiotherapeut besloten haar olympische toernooi voort te zetten. Op haar programma staat ook nog de individuele achtervolging op de baan. Na deze race beëindigt ze haar loopbaan. De definitieve beslissing over de tijdrit zal ze maandagavond na een herbeoordeling nemen.
