As David posted here yesterday Dundee council had a meeting about
maintenance of roads. The reply Pete received today (after asking
questions about cycle path gritting and cleaning) had the following
sentences:
"Further to your e-mail, I did ask at last night's meeting what
arrangements had been made for cycle tracks and whilst the Director said
he would examine the issue, his attitude was that the cycle tracks were
really only there for the purpose of leisure.
I pointed out that it was rather wasteful to invest so much in cycle
tracks and make no provision for them to be gritted during the winter
months. I am afraid it was all down to budgets and setting priorities for
main routes and bus routes."
On one hand it is depressing that people at that level don't understand
that I and many others use our bikes as transport, to replace a car when
going to work, school, shops, and pubs. To enable us to reduce the number
of cars on the road that way we need clean rideable surfaces along
efficient routes.
On the other hand it reinforces that there is no need to use any of the
facilities as I'm not doing it for leisure - and as the roads are cleaned
and gritted they fit my requirements for utility cycling 🙂
