  1. Over the last couple of months I have been racing in a number of mid-distance (80-120 kms) handicap RR and scratch races. I carry with me two bottles with Gu2o mixed in and gels.

I am finding that just as the metal starts to hit the meat (i.e the intensity really starts to get going) with not far to go, I am struck with whole leg cramps on either leg and sometimes both. These are quadricep, hamstring, calf cramps and basically wreck my race as I fall off the back trying to get rid of them - and by that time - the race for me is over.

This is most annoying as usually I am still riding strong and feeling good.

I have put it down to not drinking enough in the first hours of the race - but if you are racing for 2-3 hours with only 1500mls (i.e two bidons) then I try and ration a bit.

I have recently heard about the benefits of Potassium and Magensium in warding off cramp like this - and have bought a bottle of tablets from a vitamin store that has the two in one.

I am wondering if anyone else has this problem - or indeed tried this solution?

  2. Sounds like you're not getting enough water. Also what kind of concentrations of Gu2o are you mixing in? Might be a good idea to have at least one bottle of pure water, it's absorbed faster. Usual practice is 24-30oz of water per hour, depending upon the size of your bottles, that may be 1-2 more than you're consuming now.

The effects of dehydration actually affects your brain well before it makes you cramp up like you've been experiencing. You run into a vicious catch-22 circle where your brain can't even tell it's getting dehydrated and you don't feel thirsty, thus not drinking and making the vicious circle spiral downwards even faster.

Then the muscle-cramps sets in as electrolyte imbalances causes improper neurotransmitter function. They're not recycled in the synapses properly. Potassium & magnesium is important for proper operation of your muscles and sodium's important for carb absorption. A lot of runners chew on salt tablets, you can probaby do the same with a drink-mix.

If the cramps are caused by lactic-acid from extreme exertions on the other hand.. the track guys like to do bicarbonate-loading.. You ever noticed near the end of the TDF stages, the riders sip on those little half-size cans of soda? I betcha there's more in there than just Pepsi... 😉

  3. very good post^.
    I agree.
    You arent hydrated enough.

Try some sport drinks to. Typically work much better then just plain water especially for cramps.
