    i need advice on buying a new bike.

    has anyone extensively ridden either the 2004 learsport 8000 or 8500. they both have columbus zonal tubing, and the 8500 has the addition of a carbon wishbone seatstay. they feature 105 and ultegra respectively and are $1500 and $2200 AU

    is the fact that the frames are columbus tubing enough of a reason to consider them decent.

    one thing i noticed is that the down tube did not flatten out toward the bottom bracket to provide stiffness, is this an issue.

    please check them at www.learsport.com and give me some advice, the other bikes on my shortlist are the 2004 specialized sport and 2003 elite.

    I considered Learsport before buying my Giant OCR3. The disadvantages are:
    1) No personalised expert service: I visited their warehouse and basically they have people there who didn't seem to know anything about bikes, putting them together. I basically was not happy with the service. If you like to get a bike fitted well to you, don't look here.

    2) Basically no after sales service. They work from a warehouse, once the bike is sold, the problems are yours. Personel didn't strike me as competent.

    3) Not many people seemed to have experience with this brand, as opposed to brands like specialised, Giant, Avanti, Trek.

    4) LBS guys seemed to think that good components on a [censored] frame equals a [censored] bike...

    Advantages:
    Cheap!! good components...

    I haven't ridden a learsport for any lenght of time so can't advise you in that respect... but I ended up buying a Giant at a LBS for the added service, advice, and the knowledge that my bike was put together by a trained bike mechanic not some guy off the street taught how to do it in a week.
