Wheatley college?) following the Scottish Curriculum Authority suggestion of
posting to this group. Don't your lecturers know *anything* about newsgroup
ettiquette? You're supposed to use uk.test for testing/ learning, not
clutter up some random newsgroup with your class assignment.

I thought we'd killed this off a year or two back...looks like it was only
hibernating. Please tell your lecturer to wise up on how newsgroups work.

If you are genuinely interested in having a discussion about
something, then:

1) Choose a newsgroup which covers the subject you are interested in.
2) Spend a little time reading some of the past messages in that group
so as to get a feel for it, and check that it's a suitable group for
you.
3) Join in and have a discussion. Note that you'll only be able to do
this successfully if you are genuinely interested in the subject of
the group. You'll quickly get found out if you try to fake an
interest, and other newsgroup users will either express annoyance, or
they will just ignore you.

The subject of this newsgroup is walking, so if you were genuinely
interested in that before your lecturer told you to post here, and if
you really do want to contribute, then you'd be very welcome here.

If, on the other hand, your interest is merely in passing an
assessment set by the SQA, then that's not a correct use of this
newsgroup. Neither is it a correct use of any other newsgroup, except
for the various test groups.

The problem is that your lecturer is teaching you to do the latter,
not the former. In other words, exactly what you should NOT be doing.
And presumably your lecturer is so clueless that he/she hasn't
realised this problem. For example, I'll bet that he/she hasn't even
mentioned steps 1) to 3) above.

This pisses many regular users of this newsgroup off, because over the
years we've seen posts by thousands of students following this course,
from colleges all over Scotland. Very few of these students appear to
have had any interest in walking. NONE of them seems to have been
correctly taught what newsgroups are for, and how to get the best out
of them.

A significant proportion of the blame also lies at the door of the
SQA. Unlike the clueless lecturers, they have at least realised
(belatedly) that what they are telling you to do is wrong. See

Unfortunately, since coming to this realisation, the SQA have
obviously done nothing about it, despite their promises.
