- apply directly to the affected area
- work/rub into the fabric either rinse & repeat

I agree, dishwashing soap like Dawn works wonders. In fact I know a bike shop in town that cleans chains with Dawn. Another trick is DO NOT dry the garment until you know the spot is gone. Some fabrics like unfortunately 100% polyester can sometimes be a pain to get a stain out. - apply directly to the affected area
