I did a stint in the USCF peleton back in the early 80s for about 5
years. Back in the day, a top of the line mount was fitted out with
Campy Super Record. Mine was, except for a while my club was sponsored
by Shimano and I used early Dur Ace components that seemed to break all
the time. Anyhoo..
I never upgraded from freewheels and Super Record. Call me a dinosaur,
cheap, whatever, but I never reckoned that I needed the new technology
if I wasn't actually racing. Its all in the legs right? I did lose
the toeclips for clip-in pedals, so call me a hypocrit.
So I'm out doing my rounds today with a kid in his twenties. He's
riding a Bianchi something equipped with Shimano something. A couple
of hours into the ride he asks what are those things on my tube?
Shifters. "Oh cool, I never saw shifters like that before."
I thought that was hilarious.
