    Two rules-of-thumb of general interest to new Lantus
    users:

    1. It usually takes 3 days for the effects of a dose
    change to settle down. Thus, you can't make any
    judgements until the end of the 3rd day after, say
    starting Lantus, or changing your dose.

    2. They advertise that Lantus is a 24-hour insulin.
    Our posters report that it is a 19 to 36 hour
    insulin. Everybody seems to react to Lantus a
    little bit differently. Actually, your fat layer
    reacts a bit differently then, say, my fat layer.

    If you are a fast absorber (less than 24 hours), then you
    will "run" out sometime before your next dose. You could
    spike or see some other "mystery" change in bG during
    that period.

    If you are a slow absorber (more than 24 hours), then you
    will double-dose for some unknown time after your shot
    (yesterday's shot piled on top of today's shot). You may go
    a bit low during those hours or otherwise see some other
    "mystery" effect.

    Lantus is a "basal" insulin. Adjusting a basal insulin is
    the most difficult part of insulin therapy. Lantus is very
    popular because it is about the easiest basal to adjust.
    Nevertheless, it can be a bit difficult and confusing for
    somebody new to insulin.

    The only thing I would add to Old Al's post (which was
    excellent, by the = way) is to never, never, never mix
    Lantus with any other insulin(s) in = the same syringe.
    Also, do not use a syringe for Lantus, and then use = it
    again for another insulin. (or vice versa)
